Questions 1 – 12

(Question 1)

National airlines will not make any money on their short-haul Australian operations this year despite heavy promotions of reduced fares and a campaign to cut costs. Most of these so called flag carriers have reluctantly decided to pass on soaring fuel costs to short-haul passengers in the form of a surcharge on tickets. At the same time, they are encountering strong competition on most Australian routes from the budget carriers, who have pledged not to levy surcharges. Budget airlines have dramatically raised short-haul market share, taking advantage of the financial difficulties at flag carriers. Short-haul accounts for almost one fourth of the national carriers’ business while the remainder is derived from long-haul flights, demand for which has experienced a strong recovery.

From the above passage it can be inferred that

Questions 2 to 4

(Question 2)

Different strains of a free living bacterium showed differences in degree of motility (movement ) due to differing numbers of flagella present when each strain of bacterium was grown at 21 percent oxygen , the concentration present in the normal atmosphere. Studies were conducted to determine whether the number of flagella varied depending on the amount of oxygen in the growth medium.

Experiment 1 – Twelve cultures of the same strain of bacteria were grown with constant temperature light, & 21% oxygen. The bacteria, upon examination, averaged two polar flagella each, with one at each end of the cells.

Experiment 2- Twelve cultures of the same strain of bacteria were grown with constant temperature and light, but with 18% oxygen. The bacteria produced on average of four polar flagella each, with two at each end of the cells.

Experiment 3- Twelve cultures of the same strain of bacteria were grown with constant temperature and light, cultures, but with 16% oxygen. The bacteria produced an average of six polar flagella each, with three at each end of the cells.

Experiment 4- Twelve cultures of the same strain of bacteria were grown with constant temperature and light, but with 12% oxygen. No flagella were produced.

The control of the experiment is

(Question 3)

A valid conclusion based on experiment 2 alone is

(Question 4)

The experimental variable in this series of experiments is

(Question 5)

Phenylketonurics are people who cannot metabolise the amino acid phenylalanine. There are dangers associated with Phenylketonuria, and products containing phenylalanine must carry a warning label that states, “Phenylketonurics: contains phenylalanine.” In addition, all children in developed societies receive a phenylketonuria test at birth. From the above passage it follows that
