UMAT Eligibility
Who can apply for the UMAT?
Any student from literally any country is eligible to apply for the UMAT provided he/she has completed or is about to complete their secondary-level education (‘12th year in Australia & ‘13th year’ in New Zealand).
Some exceptions to the above statement:
- Students who are currently in their 11th year of school or lower cannot sit the UMAT.
- Students enrolled in a medical course and certified medical practitioners (for instance, physicians, dentists, cardiologists) who want to sit for UMAT, have to seek prior permission from the UMAT office before registering for the test. If you do not have a written permission, your registration will be cancelled.
- Some universities exempt international students from sitting for the UMAT. In such a case, international students may be required to sit a different test. For specific details, log onto the websites of the universities you want to apply to.
I am from a non-science stream. Can I apply?
Yes, definitely. According to ACER, it is not mandatory to have an academic knowledge of any one specific subject. UMAT questions are not to test curriculum knowledge but skills considered necessary for the medical profession (reasoning skills, communication skills, etc.).
How long can I use my UMAT score?
Your UMAT score is valid for 2 years. Within these two years, an applicant may apply to any of the universities listed under the UMAT Consortium. If you have two valid UMAT scores (say you sit for UMAT two consecutive years), you can use the one you prefer to apply to the University of your choice.
Note: You can attempt the UMAT any number of times.
How do I register?
Registration is online only. You will need a computer with internet access, a credit card (AMEX, Diners Club, MasterCard or VISA) and an email id (preferably not Hotmail or Yahoo). Your email id is your link with the UMAT office.
To register for UMAT, log on to the official UMAT website http://umat.acer.edu.au.
